He Is Patient With You

Today she did it! My 2 year old named her colors correctly! I was really starting to think she was color blind! She can name shapes and animals and other things, but colors have eluded her. She might name one here or there, but if you asked her a second time pink becomes green and blue becomes purple. Then today it happened...she told me her shoes were purple and my shirt was pink and her rubber band was blue.! She told me my pants were black and my shirt had white on it...more than once! She can see and name her colors for what they truly are!!! Woo-hoo!

But hold the phone. Now, an hour later, I asked her the color of her pants (which is light pink)
and she said....PURPLE.
Man, that took the wind out of me.:)

But isn't that how the Lord feels about us at times? He has been trying to teach us a lesson for quite a while...it might be love or patience or speaking kindness or stopping worry and trusting Him or any number of things... and we have continued to make mistakes. But then...one incredible moment comes, and He says, "She's got it!" And then, not an hour later, we somehow manage to forget what we just learned!?

"Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God,
failing to observe his commands,
his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day."
Deuteronomy 8:11

I have been reading through Deuteronomy and it is always so interesting to me that multiple times throughout the book, it warns the reader not to forget the Lord and what He has done. After seeing miracles and the Lord's provision, you would think the people would be in awe of the Lord and His goodness. You'd think they would be so thankful and grateful for all He's done for them that they would NEVER forget the lessons He has taught them. But they did...over and over and over.

We have to try not to forget.
We have to be careful not to forget.
We have to work to remember.

And so it is with sweet Hazel and her colors.
"What color is that leaf Hazel!?"
She says, "Green!"
"Awesome! And what color is that leaf?"
And she says..."Blue!!!"

And so it is with lessons from the Lord.
We learn, get it right...try again, and get it wrong.
But the beauty of it is that He continues to guide us and
teach us with a loving hand and watchful eye.
He won't give up on us, just like I won't give on Hazel.
(But for this teacher mama's sanity,
I hope we make progress soon!:))

"The LORD is not slow in keeping his promise,
as some understand slowness. Instead
He is patient with you,
not wanting anyone to perish,
but everyone to come to repentance."
2 Peter 3:9

Why Hard Things? Mercy in the Storms

Disagreement. Discontent. Complaints. Injustice. It seems that it's all we hear about in the news these days. Black vs. White. Democrat vs. Republican. Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice. etc, etc etc. The list could go on all day. But right now, there's none of that. When I turn on the news, I see one thing. A heartbroken community rallying around those who have experienced great loss,  and a shift in focus. That's because tragedy is the great equalizer. Natural disasters, sickness, death...they level the playing field. There is no color or class or financial advantage. A storm doesn't decide to spare one people over another. We are all at the mercy of something we can't control. And we are left helpless, in the waiting. That helplessness. That brokenness. The sheer uncertainty of what tomorrow holds,  brings us together. And it is beautiful to see. We can't talk our way out of it. We can't buy our way out of it. ...

When Things Don't Go Your Way

Tonight Hazel and I sat staring in a koi pond as I waited on my take-out order. She was giggling and pointing and loving the turtles and fish that were moving around below. The turtles came to the surface every now and then, and she asked why the fish never did. I was explaining how God made every animal with different needs and purposes. Fish to live underwater because the air would in fact hurt them, and the turtles with the ability to swim underwater for a time, but needing to come up for air to breathe every now and then. I went on to tell her that if they didn't stay where God made them to be, they wouldn't survive. And I realized it was such a teachable moment... for me . Today I got a "no" on a situation that has, to this point, been a "maybe," and I was hoping might be a "yes." If I'm honest, I felt disappointment and might have shed a few tears. But so clearly I felt the Lord saying, as He has been for the past few months, "I...
